6.5 Racism and Freedom

One way to put the slave power conspiracy theory is this: “Slavery is incompatible with freedom, not merely in itself, but also because the exigencies of slavery require slaveholders to trample democratic politics in order to protect it.” But the relationship between slavery and freedom is more complicated than that, since the development of freedom would not have been possible without slavery, and how Americans thought about freedom was strongly rooted in their experience of mastery, even as, with a kind of Hegelian logic, they began to turn against the slavery that had made their freedom possible.
